Dr. Jack Guttentag is a Professor-Emeritus of International Banking and has been a member of the faculty of the Wharton School since 1969. He served as an Economist with the Federal Reserve Bank of New York (1954–1960); as the Chief, Domestic Research Division of the Bank from 1960–62; and as Senior Staff, National Bureau of Economic Research (1965–1973). Dr Guttentag is presently co–director of the Zell/Lurie Real Estate Center’s International Housing Finance Program. Dr. Guttentag’s research interests include the reform of financial institutions, financial markets, and central banking institutions; innovations in monetary policy, real estate finance, housing economics, and commercial banking; and the restructuring of bank practices and lending procedures for the Federal Reserve, insurance firms, pensions groups, and savings and loan associations, including the design of unique mortgage instruments.

 

Dr. Guttentag’s consulting activities complement his research interests. His domestic clients include JP Morgan Securities, the Guild Mortgage Company, the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Association and the Mutual Savings Central Fund. His international experience includes consulting for USAID, the International Monetary Fund, New Zealand Bankers, the World Bank and the United Nations.

 

Dr. Guttentag is the Co-Founder and Chairman of GHR Systems, an innovative software company specializing in point-of-sale and other mortgage management systems. He has a popular website, Mortgage Professor, which is one of the most visited interactive information sites for mortgage borrowers. He has an extensive list of publications on banking and finance, and was the editor of Housing Finance Review.

 

Dr. Guttentag received his B.S. from Purdue University in 1948, his M.S. from Columbia University in 1949, and his Ph.D. from Columbia in 1958.
